Luxurious Reading…

summer_readingHow do you define luxury?   Is it sitting in a chair of fine leather watching a 42″ surround sound TV covered in a blanket of brown fur while being served caviar and champagne from your host’s staff?  Is it skiing the steepest and the deepest champagne powder with face-shots in endless terrain followed by laughs with great friends and multiple bottles of Dom Perignon?   Or is it …. simply enjoying the unexpected … appreciating what you have … sharing your passions?

I am sharing the attached which was circulated by a work colleague today.   We see each other on occasion at meetings,  share business ideas and talk shop …. but this was inspirational to receive.  How nice to share a ‘non-business’ idea amongst business colleagues!   THEREIN lies the luxury.   People who share business beliefs,  embrace other mutual beliefs.   How fulfulling and rewarding…  And how fun to know that the people you work with have the same – yet different – multiple layers that you do.

Not to mention the unquestionable luxury of getting lost in a good book!   So all you book club goers …. INDULGE!!!  And please SHARE!

Luxurious thought of the day…

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, ‘Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.’” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Living the dream! ~ Handbook 2010 ~

chickendreamI received a wonderful email yesterday from my eldest brother.   In the Luxury Real Estate business, I aim to create dreams for people daily.    That is my job and I love doing it.   ‘A man’s home is his castle’  is a proverbial English expression which reflects that we each have our own individuality —  ours to portray in our own gorgeous castle.

But along with that comes other lessons in living  … those of ‘living well’.  Luxury living takes on many meanings.   This ‘code’ reflects many of my own principles.   Read and enjoy…

HANDBOOK 2010

Health:

1.       Drink plenty of water.

2.       Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.

3.       Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants..

4.       Live with the 3 E’s — Energy, Enthusiasm and Empathy

5.       Make time to pray.

6.       Play more games

7.       Read more books than you did in 2009 .

8.       Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day

9.       Sleep for 7 hours.

10.    Take a 10-30 minute walk daily. And while you walk, smile.

Personality:

11.    Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

12.    Don’t have negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.

13.    Don’t overdo. Keep your limits.

14.    Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

15.    Don’t waste your precious energy on gossip.

16.    Dream more while you are awake

17.    Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need..

18.    Forget issues of the past. Don’t remind your partner with His/her mistakes of the past. That will ruin your present happiness.

19.    Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don’t hate others.

20.    Make peace with your past so it won’t spoil the present.

21.    No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

22.    Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn.  Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.

23.    Smile and laugh more.

24.    You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagree… Read the rest of this entry »

New Year’s Resolutions … Save and Go Green!

imagesFor most people around the globe,  as they watch the clock strike twelve on December 31st,   the New Year symbolizes the beginning of a better tomorrow.     And for many,  that includes a resolution of ‘trimming’ … trimming a waistline,  trimming excess spending and trimming wasted time.   This clever money saving article by Roberta Murphy identifies ways to trim all three  …   squeezing every inch out of every penny while at the same time  increasing your own personal green initiative!   A fine New Year’s resolution, I would say!

1. Pack a healthy lunch, fill a Thermos of coffee, and spare the environment another plastic bottle by carrying water in a reusable container.   Roberta’s son Eric, now saves at least $5 per day out of his pocket. Take away a couple of dollars, max, for ingredients, and you are still dollars ahead.

2. Paste a sticker that says, 800-FREE-411 (or 800-373-3411) onto both your cell and home telephone. Instead of paying your telephone service up to $3.50 for a telephone number, why not listen to a 10-second commercial and get the number for free? Makes sense to me. Read the rest of this entry »

Luxurious thought of the Day…

In the sweetness of friendship, let there be laughter and sharing of pleasures.    For in the dew of little things, the heart finds it’s morning and is refreshed.

Less IS more! Back to basics in luxury travel…

Pumulani08_146Ever want to simply ‘forget it all’?    Get away from high tech amenities?   Escape the fast paced media barrage?!

In the new age world of high tech glitz,   these hotels have adopted the back to basic approach according to Food and Wine Magazine.

St. John,  USVI:   In the U.S. Virgin Islands, Caneel Bay recently removed TVs and telephones from its 166 rooms.

Papoose Creek, Montana:   The new Lodge at Sun Ranch offers luxuriously refurbished homesteader cabins in a spectacular setting.

Lake Malawi,  Africa:   And at Malawi’s new Pumulani resort, guests can avoid motorized transport by exploring Lake Malawi on a wooden dhow, a traditional African sailboat handcrafted by local builders.

And to add to this list:

Taupo,  New Zealand:    True retreats in every sense, the rooms at the Huka Lodge at Huka Falls, Taupo, New Zealand are harmonious and deliberately simple in approach. Designed to allow the beauty of the landscape to dominate while providing soft light and layers of well appointed luxury.    Luxuriously  sleep under a mesh canopy bed  in your private cabin alongside the Taupo River.     All that is missing is… Brad Pitt…

In British Columbia,  Canada,   Canadian Mountain Holidays will fly you to a remote lodge where you will enjoy nothing but wonderful food, friends and champagne powder ….  with the occasional massage and hot tub thrown in.    Better than fantastic…

Get back to basics …

And where are the ladies??! …

   EducationIsTheKeyToSuccessBoy

“The only persons who are educated are the ones who have learned how to learn… and change.”   Carl Rogers

It is commonly thought  that higher education brings great accomplishment and success.     Most of us grew up believing that education and earning power were synonymous with each other.

But these days, that could be questioned.

Below,  luxury home digest  identifies a partial list of billionaires who dropped out of school and went on to become outrageous successes in the technology, entertainment and fashion fields.

1.  Sir Richard Branson dropped out of high school at the age of 16 and soon founded both Virgin Records and Virgin Atlantic Airways–as well as 300 other companies. He also bought a 79-acre Caribbean Island at the age of 24

2.  Kirk Kerkorian is a Las Vegas Legend with big stakes in Bellagio, Excaliber, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, New York-New York, Circus Circus, The Mirage, and more. He dropped out of school in the 8th Grade.

3.  Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, needs little introduction. He and wife Melinda are world-class philanthropists in addition to being the wealthiest couple in the world. Most of us know he was a Harvard dropout who couldn’t resist teaming up with:

4.  Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft who dropped out of Washington State University to join buddy Bill in their MS venture. He ended up with over 100 million shares of Microsoft and today owns 12 pro sports teams, lots of real estate, and big stakes in other tech and media companies including Dreamworks Studios.

5.  Steve Jobs dropped out of Reed College after just one semester and went on to found Apple Computer and become the largest shareholder in Disney Studios. A dropout earning $1 per year might have bolstered my parents admonishments, were it not that Mr. Jobs also owns 30 million shares of Apple plus perks.

6.  Larry Ellison, flashy founder of Oracle, dropped out of Illinois’ University of Urbana-Champaign (as well as the University of Chicago) and in 1977 invested $2000 to start Oracle Corporation, which is today the second  largest software company in the world. He also pilots his own jets.

7.   Michael Dell dropped out of the University of Texas at Austin after starting a little computer company he called PC’s Unlimited. Wildly successful, this dropout went on to develop Dell Computers into a name with worldwide recognition.

8.   David Geffen, a beacon in the entertainment industty, was another University of Texas at Austin dropout. He was also a cofounder of DreamWorks–and likely shares genius and coffee with Paul Allen (above).

9.  The Ralph Lauren name has become an icon in the fashion world. The City College of New York dropped out and founded the Polo Ralph Lauren brand. He reportedly got an early start, though, by selling neckties in high school where he declared his intentions to become a millionaire.

10. Sheldon Adelsonis a casino legend/kingpin and Wall Street wizard, who is also a City College of New York dropout. He is CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corp which also holds the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino and the Sands Expo and Convention Center. Adelson also help found the COMDEX computer trade show.

Any other notable billionaire dropouts that we failed to mention?    And… where are the ladies??!….
